Agricultural Law

Our Agricultural Department is headed by the Senior Partner and part-time farmer, Mike Bracegirdle.

Had Mike followed family tradition, he would have been a 17th generation Cheshire Dairy Farmer!

All of Mike's relations either continue to farm in Cheshire or have connections within the farming community. Mike's daughter is presently training to be a Vet at Bristol University, eventually hoping to join a large animal practice

Mike is well aware of the pressures facing the farming community in the 21st Century.

The financial worries due to late payment of the Single Farm Payment, problems with TB testing, keeping up-to-date with DEFRA's requirements to name but a few.

The farming industry has become much more commercially varied lately with farmers diversifying into property developers (conversion of farm buildings etc), landlords (letting out pony paddocks etc) and other recreational pursuits (quad biking, venture rides etc).

Mike's immediate predecessor and Senior Partner, David Harrison, (Alsager Equestrian Centre) equally had interests outside of the legal world and Mike's daughter also gave Mike personal insight into the costs of ponies, horses etc!

Not only is Mike fully familiar with the IT requirements of a modern day farmer he is able to draw on his own first hand experience. Within Poole Alcock Mike is able to call upon the assistance of Philip Harrison in respect of farmers with Equestrian/Litigation problems and Jill Novotny in our Commercial Department in respect of barn conversions and other Commercial Conveyancing developments.

For farmers, Inheritance Tax planning is another worry, again Mike is able to call upon the assistance of his fellow Partner, Charles Smalley, Head of our Private Client and Probate Department who is a member of the Trust and Estate Practitioners.

Mike has also been able to help those farmers who have been involved in Health & Safety Litigation and is fully familiar with the Health & Safety requirements for all environments. For those who fall foul of the regulations, Mike is able to call upon the assistance of David Gaut, Head of our Crime Department who can assist him where appropriate.

Mike is confident that he can provide a full service to all farmers and those involved in the countryside's requirements.
