What’s the scoop on vanilla?

The price of vanilla has soared to a record high of around US $600 per kilo.

With the ingredient now more expensive than silver, some UK ice cream businesses are reported to be rethinking offering vanilla flavoured ice cream, as they are struggling to absorb the rising cost.

Ruby Violet, a chain of artisanal ice cream parlours based in London, has already ceased offering the flavour completely, “for the foreseeable future”.

Over 75% of the world’s vanilla is grown on Madagascar. The sharp rise in price is the result of a cyclone that hit the island in March 2017, damaging a significant number of its vanilla plantations.

Ice cream lovers and businesses alike will be hoping that supplies of the nation’s favourite flavour don’t stay cold for too long.
