Novak Djokovic and Angelique Kerber took the honours at Wimbledon this weekend, but the All England Lawn Tennis Club registered a victory of its own over German supermarket, Aldi.
Wimbledon sued Aldi recently over a new champagne range described as the “SW19 Edition”. Wimbledon has had an exclusive branding arrangement for champagne with Lanson since 2001.
The parties have now reached a confidential out-of-court settlement.
The incident is an example of the caution businesses should take when looking to associate themselves with national institutions. The benefits of brand association can be great, but there is also a legal minefield to be wary of.
