Commercial Property Evictions and Coronavirus

7th April 2020

News : Litigation

With the effects of coronavirus being felt everywhere, the government turned their eye on the rental market and announced a series of measures to help protect renters and landlords affected.

The government has announced that commercial tenants who are unable to pay their rent because of coronavirus will be protected from eviction. The measures currently going through Parliament mean that no business will be forced out of their premises if they miss a rental payment in the next 3 months. Commercial tenants will still be liable for rent after this suspension is over and landlords will thereafter be free to exercise forfeiture or look to recovering rent arrears. Many commercial tenants and landlords have already started discussing voluntary arrangements, with rent payments due shortly.
