From October, inspectors from the HSE will begin an initiative of inspections focusing on manufacturing businesses where silica containing materials are used.
The purpose of these targeted inspections is to ensure that control measures are in place to protect worker’s respiratory health.
The inspections will include brick and tile manufacturers, foundries, stone working sites and manufacturers of kitchen worktops and ahead of this the HSE have updated their guidance regarding silica in brick and tile manufacturing, stonework and foundries. They have also produced an ebulletin to support the industry.
The HSE have stated that Silica is the biggest risk to constructions workers after asbestos. Prolonged exposure can cause Lung Cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and Silicosis which can cause severe breathing difficulties and increases the risk of lung infections.
Should you be diagnosed with an respiratory illness which you believe could be due to exposure to silica dust, please feel free to contact our Personal Injury team who have over 30 years’ experience of helping people recover compensation on 01270 762325 or PI@poolealcock.co.uk. We are happy to help.
