The pub chain JD Wetherspoon is planning to source more of its drinks menu from UK and non-EU producers, in response to Brexit.
According to reports, Champagne from France and wheat beers produced in Germany are to be replaced by sparkling wine from Australia and the UK and wheat beers from UK-based brewers.
Chairman Tim Martin, who is a prominent Brexiteer, said that “this move helps us to broaden our horizons so that we create an improved offer for the 2 million customers who visit our pubs each week”.
Martin believes that there will be “an inevitable transfer of trade post-Brexit to countries outside the EU, which will reduce prices in shops and pubs”.
This forecast may bode ill for EU-suppliers, but UK pub-goers will be hoping that the predicted reduction in prices turns into reality.
